The McLaren boss assessed Verstappen`s title chances outside of Red Bull. McLaren chief executive Zak Brown answered the question of who plays a more important role at Red Bull - driver Max Verstappen or outgoing designer Adrian Newey.
Well, ultimately you need both. I don`t think you can win without a star driver, so both are needed. People ask me all the time whether it`s the car or the driver, and I answer that it`s both.
I would describe it as there are six or seven drivers on the grid who would be champions for Red Bull. No matter how great Max was, and he is one of the best in history, I don`t think Max would win the title today in any other car.
At the same time, you can appreciate the difference. Sergio Perez is a superb driver who on his good day can fight with Max, but look at the gap.
So, in my opinion, both are needed, because Formula 1 is becoming denser, and Max is doing special things. But look what happens from first to fifth place. One day we are second, the next day we are fifth, and everything changes. When the cars get closer, the pilot plays a decisive role.
