The seventh racket of the world, Arina Sobolenko, scored the 10th victory in her career over a rival from the top 5 (with 12 defeats). In the group stage of the WTA Finals, she defeated No. 3 Jessica Pegula to advance to the semi-finals (6:3, 7:5). At the final, for the first time, she beat two representatives of the top five in one tournament. In the first round, Sobolenko defeated No. 2 Ons Zhaber.
Sobolenko is the third tennis player from Belarus to reach the final predicted by soccer rankings semi-finals. This was previously done by Natalia Zvereva in 1995 and Victoria Azarenka in 2011 and 2012.
